Our Philosophy
Equipoise Horsemanship goes beyond ordinary horse training and provides the tools and knowledge for the highest quality
of relationships.
Our
philosophy sets our
programs apart.
While many horse programs that focus on the horse as the object,
our programs focus on the
communication,
trust,
and
love that transpires between a
horse and
their human partner.
This concept creates a lasting relationship and brings an
open-minded
approach
to the
important aspects of horsemanship.
Equipoise brings the horse community together.
We work with individuals or groups involved in
natural horsemanship
and
horse
care.
It's a
collaboration where education and resources are always nearby to help nourish
the horse and heart.

What Is Natural Horsemanship?
Natural horsemanship is achieved by working with the horse's behavior, instincts and personality in an clear and respectful manner.
There are many horsemen and women who practice these natural communication methods including: Pat & Linda Parelli, Ray Hunt, John Lyons, Linda Tellington-Jones, Monty Roberts, and Dennis Reis. Each with their own style, tools and techniques.
Body (non-verbal) language and leadership is used to communicate to the horse and by learning to listen to the horse by watching for subtle moves that indicate understanding, a graceful relationship can be achieved.
It is a truly beautiful sight to see horse and human working in harmony with trust and respect. That is the essence of true horsemanship!

Our Family
Alicia has over 20 years experience working with horses. She has taught all levels of riding and has competed professionally on the Hunter/Jumper circuit around the country. On her journey, she has adopted wild horses, taught equestrian lessons, worked on ranches, produced films, worked as a veterinary technician and studied with many amazing horse experts and clinicians. Alicia has spent the last several years with wild horses studying herd behavior and natural communication techniques. She is always seeking to advance knowledge and skills that keep communication and relationships healthy and natural. She studies the work of the greatest natural horsemen in the world and aspires to use that knowledge to create a lasting community of like-minded horse people to share and grow together.
The Equipoise Herd consists of five incredible horses and includes a Belgian Draft mare (Moonshine), a Shire yearling (Feya), 2 Mustangs (KoKo-Pelli & Chapeyo), and a lovely Overo Paint mare (Gypsy).
Natural horsemanship recognizes the fact that horses are herd animals who need the company of other horses. They need to interact by touching and playing. As prey and herd animals, horses know that safety is in numbers and that a working herd hierarchy is there to protect and nourish them. So a solitary horse is often a stressed horse.
Our herd lives, grazes and thrives together!
Douglas, Alicia, the dogs (Belle and Booda), the cat (Linus) and the herd live in southern Utah - What an inspiring and powerful place... we are grateful everyday for the intense beauty that surrounds us.
